Indica Indeed, Christy Deems a 4.2

Christy on 6.20.2010

Lost Coast Indica IPA

Commercial Description:  A hoppy full bodied beer, crisp and clean. Made with generous amounts of Columbus, Willamette and Centennial hops.

4.2 Aroma: 7 Appearance: 4 Taste: 8 Palate: 5 Overall 18

lightly sweet caramel aroma, with just a hint of hops.  Orange-y, amber color, very clear, minimal head.  Medium sweetness/maltiness, nice bitter finish at the end, though.  The sweetness seems to fade with subsequent sips.  Medium body - very fizzy on the tongue, long bitter finish, but not too bitter.  I’ve had lots of IPA’s, and every time I have this beer (which is less than I should), I remember what a great beer it is and vow to drink it more often.  I promise to keep my vow this time!

Christy Gives So. Tier High Marks

Christy on 6.11.2010

Southern Tier IPA

Commercial Description:  IPA stands for India Pale Ale and ours is an American version of the classic style. IPA’s namesake lies in its colonial roots. British soldiers on their way to India dark a lot of beer, but found it would go stale on the long voyages. Meanwhile, brewers knew that by adding more hops, the beer would stay fresh. Voila! A new style was born and it is one we are proud to brew. Southern Tier IPA is a triple-hopped on its journey to your glass for a fully aromatic experience.
4.0 Aroma: 7 Appearance: 3 Taste: 8 Palate: 4 Overall: 18

Amber color, minimal head, medium bitterness, light sweetness, lightly sour, salty, medium body, lively taste.  This is a totally drinkable IPA. - clean, crisp, flavorful. Not too heavy, just enough bitterness.  Another great beer from Southern Tier

R.I.P. Christy, Colin and Barry

Christy, Colin and Barry 6.8.2010

As the crowd died down on a Tuesday night in Lake City, three people decided to take a chance on a bottle of beer...

He'brew R.I.P.A. on Rye

Commercial Description:  Savor the provocative spirit of R.I.P.A on RYE, our HE’BREW monument to the richness, the bitterness and the sacred sweetness that is life...

Malts: Specialty 2-Row, Rye Ale, Torrified Rye, Rye Flakes, Crystal Rye 75, Crystal Malt 80, Wheat, Kiln Amber, CaraMunich 60
Hops: Warrior, Cascade, Simcoe, Crystal, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial
Dry Hopped with Simcoe, Amarillo and Crystal

4.1 Aroma: 8 Appearance: 5 Taste: 8 Pallate: 4 Overall: 16
(snippets from three ratings cut and pasted together)  The nose brings visions of old Kentucky, and Kentucky smells like the bottom of a whiskey barrel.  It looks like Kentucky swamp in the spring time.  First taste is all bourbon, next is a nice malty finnish.  Caramel, caramel, caramel - and it burns on the way down.  Long bitter finish. Better than the original.

You're Not The Boss of Mike, Gives Witnica a 3.5

Mike on 6.6.2010

Browar Witnica Black Boss Porter

3.5  Aroma: 6  Appearance: 3  Taste: 7  Palate: 4  Overall: 15

This is a big sweet porter. It lacks any of the smokiness that I
really like but it's still a tasty beer. Sweet molasses and raisins
dominate the aroma. Tastes just like it smells, sweet and malty.
Dark golden brown in color with a thin head and a rich resinous mouth
feel. This is a rich porter with a lot of alcohol.

Mike Likes The Cyclops, Rates a 3.7

Mike on 6.6.2010

Elysian Cyclops Barleywine

Commercial Description: Cyclops is nearly all pale malt, with some crystal and Munich for color, bittered with English Magnum and finished with Northwest Amarillo and Centennial hops.

3.7  Aroma: 6  Appearance: 3  Taste: 8  Palate: 4  Overall: 16

Watch out, this beer goes down real easy.  At 9.85 percent alcohol that's an accomplishment.  Sweet with hints of vanilla, but balanced well with a slight alcohol bite in the finish.  I could drink a lot of this beer.  Better buy it one bottle at a time.

Schools Out, Mike Gives Epiphany Pale a 3.2

Our second installment of Staff Beer Ratings, a brand new program at The Beer Authority that hopes to give a voice to our talented beer staff, is from Mike.  Several times a week we'll be posting ratings by each of our staff (and occasionally myself) on bottled beers in the store.  We're using the ratebeer.com system so that many of you can have a comparison basis for their picks.  The beers they pick are compensated by the store and we've encouraged them to choose new and/or interesting beers.

Old Schoolhouse Epiphany Pale

Commercial Description: A medium-bodied pale ale with moderate bitterness and modest citrusy hop aroma. This is a good beer to start with when building up the courage for the stronger beers. Epiphany pale may even support some seekers on their path to enlightenment.

3.2  Aroma: 6  Appearance: 3  Taste: 6  Palate: 2  Overall: 15

This is a nice little beer from Winthrop, WA.  It pours a bright copper color with very little head.  Not much hop aroma or bite, but a nice malt sweetness with just enough hops in the finish to balance nicely.  This beer isn't going to knock your socks off but it's a well crafted - if mild - pale ale.

Laurelwood Workhorse IPA

Commercial Description: Workhorse is a true West Coast IPA, featuring over-the-top hop flavor and aroma. Three separate dry hop additions in the fermenter make this one of our hoppiest beers to date. 7.5% ALC by Volume. 17º Plato O.G. 3º Plato T.G. 80 IBU
3.7 Aroma: 7  Appearance: 3  Taste: 8  Palate: 4  Overall: 15

Crisp, clean aroma, with a hint of hops.  Nice medium-caramel color.  Initial flavor is a bit malty for an IPA, but the finish is very hoppy.  Overall, a very solid IPA.
